Matt Moore: The backup the Dolphins are lucky having!

Yesterday was one weird Sunday.  One minute I am waiting for Ryan Tannehill to get a red zone touchdown versus the Jets defense and the next minute I see Tannehill go down in a heap of pain on a sack by Calvin Pace on the next series.  While the other sideline has Tim Tebow, the Dolphins gladly and happily had Matt Moore who was willing and able to lead the Dolphins to victory.

After Ryan Tannehill was named the starter, Matt Moore has been waiting patiently for his chance to prove other people wrong.  He's been rumored to be traded somewhere for a late round pick or receiver at the end of training camp.  The one thing that stood out from his conversation with the media back in August as far as his role was that Matt Moore mentioned he was ready for the relief pitcher role.

On Sunday, Philbin summoned the bullpen and brought in Matt Moore after the sack took Tannehill out of the game and after a couple of warm up tosses, Moore was the man for the rest of the day.  Although 57.9% of passes completed, 1TD and no interceptions, and a 96.6 quarterback ratiing,  Moore could made no mistakes.  Aided by patient running by Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas, and awesome field position and special teams play, Matt Moore's day was not spectacular, but just enough to bury the Jets.

Even though Tannehill's ability to mobilize the offense complete with hand signals that the offense s was missing, Matt Moore worked with what he had in a gutsy performance of taking over, running the offense, and not shying away from making plays down the field.  On Sunday the Miami Dolphins defense and special teams found a way to get the job done (two blocks on special teams punt and field goal) by Jimmy Wilson and 3rd round pick Olivier Vernon, including a punt block recovery in the endzone for a TD.

Basically, Moore didn't have to do much, but manage the game and get a hold or a save similar to a relief pitcher.

If anything, sending Matt Moore out there was a confidence builder for the team and for the coaching staff who were rumored to be unhappy with Moore's play in preseason and not turning out to be the guy that would challenge Ryan Tannehill.

Most of all, it keeps the Dolphins moving in the right direction and shows the resiliency of this team as a team that plays together and wins together.

This is a new era in Miami Dolphins football and the Miami Dolphins are proving others wrong behind one very important concept: team.

Phins Up!

Dolphins quiet the Jets talking with a 30-9 win

Written by Daniel Eliesen on .

In the famous words of former head coach Dennis Green " they are who we thought they were ". Marc Sanchez and the New York Jets are who everyone thought they were, bullies who run their mouths but cant back it up on the football field. After a week of trash talking, the Dolphins players had the last laugh on Sunday.

In an impressive and dominating performance the Dolphins special teams and defense came to play on Sunday making several big plays on route to a 30-9 win against their bitter rivals.

Whether it was a blocked punt by Jimmy Wilson that led to an Olivier Vernon touchdown, a blocked Vernon FG a 50+ yard return from Thigpen, the Dolphins special teams unit had the best performance of the season and probably in years. Brandon Fields and Dan Carperenter also contributed with a strong performances. Darren Rizzi's unit outplayed long time Jets special teams coach Mike Westoff.

The Phins defense matched the special teams strong performance with dominant play in the secondary picking off Marc Sanchez a couple of times. The defense consistently put pressure on Sanchez and never let him get in rhythm successfully turning the New York crowd against the struggling QB.

The work Kevin Coyle has done with this secondary should not be ignored as he has got the most of his players allowing them to play at their full potential.

On the other side of the ball, Ryan Tannehill had to leave the game early with an injury however are early reports are encouraging and he should be back next week. Matt Moore the true professional he always is filled in admirably. Moore didn't have the offense firing on all cylinders however they were able to make the plays when needed.

The Dolphins run game was slightly improved however there is still work to be done, Daniel Thomas had one of his most encouraging games of the season though the numbers might show it in the box score.

Joe Philbin really had his team focused and prepared this week as his cool, confident demeanour definitely influenced his young impressionable squad.

Overall it was a great time win which puts the Dolphins at 4-3 with a winning record for the first time in 687 days.

A couple of game balls this week should be given out to coach Rizzi ( special teams coach ) Coach Philbin and Olivier Vernon and Jimmy Wilson.

Dolphins are starting to get the most out of their young players and hopefully this Sunday was more of good things to come.

Let the good times roll as the Dolphins are currently riding a 3 game winning streak.

Special teams, defense lift Dolphins to 30-9 win over Jets

Written by Daniel Monardo on .

After a week of back and forth trash talking, the Miami Dolphins did their talking on the field and there really was no contest. The Dolphins left New York after a 30-9 rout of the rival Jets to improve their record to 4-3 and remain in second place in the division. The Jets fall to 3-5 and find themselves in the AFC East basement.

Miami's start to the game wasn't exactly encouraging as rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill limped off the field with the Dolphins holding a 3-0 lead following a sack by Calvin Pace. With the fan base holding their collective breaths and expecting the worse, backup Matt Moore entered the game in a situation extremely similar to last season. Tannehill did not return and it was later revealed that he suffered a quad contusion, however he is optimistic to play next week.

After a 33 yard Dan Carpenter field goal opened the scoring, the Dolphins aggressive play calling continued as they successfully recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff. Although the recovery didn't result in any points, Miami's special teams unit came up big later in the quarter as Jimmy Wilson blocked a Jets punt which was recovered by rookie Olivier Vernon in the end zone. The touchdown gave Miami a 10-0 advantage.

On the next Jets' possession, Mark Sanchez couldn't avoid the blitz, getting strip sacked by Nolan Carroll and Paul Soliai recovered putting Miami in prime field position at the New York 32 yard line. With Moore at the helm, the Dolphins only needed six plays until Daniel Thomas found pay dirt for the score and a 17-0 Dolphins lead. Carpenter drilled his second of three field goals in the game, this one from 39 yards out to make it 20-0. With the Jets threatening to score points before the half, Olivier Vernon blocked a 35 yard Nick Folk field goal attempt to keep New York off the board. The miss was Folk's first of the season.

It look over two quarters but the Jets eventually recorded points as Folk split the uprights with a 38 yard attempt. Miami quickly put an end to any momentum New York generated by capping a 6 play, 40 yard drive with a 4 yard touchdown pass from Moore to Fasano in the back of the end zone, extending the lead to 27-3. A Chaz Schilens 5 yard touchdown was as close at the Jets would get as the 2 point conversion and onside kick both failed. With the game already out of reach, the Dolphins coaching staff sent Carpenter out for a third time in what is believed to be an attempt to increase his confidence from early season misses. The 42 yard kick was good, sealing the 30-9 victory.

Matt Moore's numbers of 11-for-19 passing for 131 yards and 1 touchdown are not eye popping but the veteran quarterback was impressively able to manage the game and put Miami in a position to win without turning the ball over. Bush and Thomas saw equal work as Bush finished with 59 yards on 14 carries and Thomas totalled 42 yards on the ground on 15 attempts. While Bush has yet to regain his early season form, his performance today was an improvement over recent weeks. Jabar Gaffney had one reception for 30 yards in his Miami debut and Brian Hartline finished with 4 catches for 41 yards. The Dolphins defence prevented the Jets from finding a rhythm all game long as they came up with four sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. A lot of credit belongs to Miami's special teams coach Darren Rizzi who dialled up a successful onside kick, a blocked punt, blocked field goal and a 57 yard kickoff return all in a single game.

After a 1-3 start to the season, the surging Dolphins have reeled off three straight victories to split the season series with the Jets. The win also means the Dolphins who are currently the 5th seed in the AFC keep pace with the division leading New England Patriots and remain a half game back. Up next, the Dolphins travel to Indianapolis to take on the 4-3 Colts looking to keep their momentum going.

Dolphins O line says bring it on to the Jets !

Written by Daniel Eliesen on .

All week long the Jets have been doing what the Jets do best, run their mouths. Whether it’s Rex Ryan, Laron Landry, or Aaron Maybin each of them have taken their respective shots at Dolphins stud running back and perhaps little bit of a pretty boy Reggie Bush.

While bounty might be a bit of a stretch, the Jets players have mentioned on several occasions they plan on hurting or injuring Bush while be it in a “legal way”.

The Dolphins held back from really engaging in a war of words as they have portraying a quiet confidence which must be reflective of their head coach and what they were instructed. No one needs to tell this Dolphins team how important this game is. The Dolphins came out to practice today to “New York New York” by Frank Sinatra followed by a James Brown song “Revenge “. The Dolphins definitely want to shut up this Jets team.

Today Reggie Bush tweeted the following below, a humble yet effective way of letting everyone know he isn’t afraid of know one and that he is ready to bring it this Sunday.

Reggie Bush ‏@reggie_bush

Imma let the homie T.I talk to em' http://youtu.be/K8tjxXLPEtg

His offensive line however isn’t so quiet and humble and did not falter at the opportunity to protect and defend their star back. As Randy Starks said

"It’s not cool. But I'm sure the offensive line will take care of that,"

Below I have listed a couple of quotes from Mike Pouncey, Cam Wake and Richie courtesy of Ben Volin and Omar Kelly.

Mike Pouncey on Aaron Maybin: "He won't even play enough to hurt Reggie."

Mike Pouncey on Aaron Maybin: "He won't even play enough to hurt Reggie."

Richie Incognito reminded Cameron Wake that he played with Aaron Maybin. His response to 68: "better watch out. He's coming for you."

"I have to be on punt block to say something to him," Dolphins center Mike Pouncey said of Maybin.

We hear all the talking. We understand its part of Jets week. All the talking stops on Sunday," Richie Incognito said.

The talking is fun and everyone wants to shut up the Jets but talk is just talk, let’s not forget it’s what the Dolphins do this Sunday that is the most important. This is a business trip and the Dolphins need to come home with the W.

Rex Ryan starting a war of words with the Dolphins ?

Written by Daniel Eliesen on .

Right on cue, it’s Wednesday afternoon and right on time the war of words started by Rex Ryan has begun.

Below are a couple of tweets from Rex Ryan’s afternoon’s press conference. Ryan not saying anything more irrational than his normal press conferences but his comments are sure to spark something in the Dolphins locker room.

Manish Mehta ‏@MMehtaNYDN

Rex on getting apology from Bush: "I don't expect one... Maybe Revis."

Manish Mehta ‏@MMehtaNYDN

Rex clearly took umbrage with Reggie Bush's veiled comments about Jets getting what they deserved (Revis injury) earlier this season #nyj

Manish Mehta ‏@MMehtaNYDN

Rex not worried about payback for hot sauce comments last time about Bush: "I apologized for my comments. I expect him to do the same" #nyj

Armando Salguero ‏@ArmandoSalguero

Rex Ryan calls Sunday's game a "huge, huge game" and then repeats the word "huge" a couple of more times. So he thinks game is HUGE.

In addition to the notable sound bites we also found out Pouha might not suit up this week which could provide the lift the Dolphins run game needs.

Manish Mehta ‏@MMehtaNYDN

Smith, Powell, McKnight, pace, Scott and Cumberland won't practice today. #nyj

Ryan is right however this Sunday is a HUGE game and there would be no better way to shut up Rex than send the Jets to 3-5 and have the Dolphins inch closer to the top of the AFC East and put them in the real playoff discussion.
